These buttons were produced to commemorate the passing of George Washington in 1799.  They were attached on the cuffs of a jacket.  After leading the continental army to victory thus securing freedom for the 13 colonies from British rule, he would secure the adoption of the new constitution and serve as the new nation’s first president.  He is seen as the father of the nation.
